I don't know if anyone else does it this way, but I've always thought it made sense to do noise reduction, eq, de-essing first so that the compressor isn't boosting those frequencies right before you're trying to take them out.

I don't have any good reason not to use Match Loudness lol). More compression or less compression can help reach loudness targets it just takes a few tries to get it right(I've also been doing it this way so long it usually takes a guess or two and I get it pretty close by doing it manually.

I mostly just use trial and error to get the end result to whatever spec I need it to. For long form narration I go with a fast attack to help with stray peaks, quick release (30-40 ms usually) to avoid the pumping sound of the compressor engaging. Threshold set at the average/mid point between the tallest peaks and the low peaks, just as a starting point, adjust from there depending on what specs are needed. Usually a ratio around 3 or 4 to 1, sometimes I go 5 or lower than 3 it really just depends on how high the peaks are. Once all this is set, that's when I would introduce compression. Listen for other bothersome frequency ranges and cut those as needed. I use a harsh slope high pass usually set around 40-70Hz depending on the voice range, to help remove mic rumble or other unwanted low end noises. I find it retains the quality and character of the recording better to use a gate or expander to reduce noise floor as long as it's a decent recording.ĮQ.
