Not only is it quicker and way more efficient to skin on the lower glacier, but it’s 100 times more safe while traveling. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the strategy for this expedition as we were climbing at guide book pace and practicing a single and double carry ascent.Įven though descending was a complete pain in the rear, I’d choose taking the splitboards up again over snow shoeing. If we took over a month to climb and made numerous double/triple carries in between camps that would enable us to snowboard down from caches with no sleds, then splitboarding may have been more feasible. We simply could not find an efficient way to descend while roped up with heavy sleds in tow…or in front, depending how you rig it based on the degree and direction of slope. In short, splitboarding Denali was a grueling undertaking and in the end we did not find it to be super practical for much of the time on the mountain. If you have ever thought to yourself, “Hmmm…you know, I REALLY want to spend a month climbing North America’s largest mountain and then I want to snowboard down it” (as most of us have certainly thought multiple times), then you’ve come to the right place.įirst, a note about our experience splitboarding Denali. All in all though, that's a minor inconvenience for me and I still love grabbing this puffy anytime.Greetings, ya scallywags! It’s your Captain, Captain Red Beard here, and I’ve got quite the list for ya. Perhaps keep the interior pockets above the exterior ones, or just reduce the size of the pocket and/or provide stiffer mesh to reduce the bouncing. I'd rather have offset exterior/interior pockets. Granted, I could have fewer things on my person, but I don't have all that much stuff and it bothers me. Also, the inner mesh pockets seem great at first, but if I have something in the front pocket (like a phone) and then another item in an inner pocket (like a wallet), it gets really bulky and the mesh has a bit too much stretch so things bounce around a lot and is annoying while walking. I've already torn some sizable holes in it while hiking through in el Potrero Chico (admittedly a thorny place, but I was bummed that it tore so much). One downside I've noticed are that it could do with being more rugged to thorny environments. This is now my go to puffy for pretty much all occasions. And the hood is oversized and awesome for a helmet but the wire brim it has needs a redesign, it's too small and just a tad in my peripheral vision sometimes.Īs a Texan, i was blown away that I could get by in 20F weather with a tee shirt and this micro puffy.

The pack in its own pocket feature doesn't work, the fits too tight. Had I the budget for only one of the two I would choose the uberlayer.Ģ small complaints, not significant but worth noting. For extended sub zero temperature I still defer to my "michelin man" parka but this is a far more useful piece. I belive that when properly layered this jacket can match the parka most days. I went for high loft down and large baffles for maximum heat. I have been a belay parka man my whole life. Forget the rains shell and get caught in down pour? Well at least you are still warm even if you are a little wet. need it water proof? throw a rain shell on top. So versitile, need it warmer? put a flece under. The main selling point is breathability like I have never seen but with decent wind and rain resistance. Good long body and arms, some room to throw a midlayer under but not too much This is probably the most diverse and well used jacket I own. I never expect a mid layer to be fully waterproof so I still think it deserves a 5 star rating. On a good note, it dried after the storm super quick and kept me warm. It got pretty wet and luckily I had a rain shell to put over it.

I got stuck in a hail/ rain storm this summer on a mountain and I would not exactly call it waterproof in extreme conditions like that. I even used it in Hawaii on a hike in the big island when light rain came in. I wear this around town all the time and have it in my bag on any bike or hike. Come spring skiing i completely removed the shell and went just with this. I use this as a mid layer during ski season. I'm 6'3 and have a large and it fits very well. I guess that's a true indication as to how popular it is. I checked every day for like a month until it showed up. It took me forever to actually get one because they never had the color or size I wanted. Explore in Teva Search Within Women Search
